What we look for in college grads
Looking for a post-graduate job can be a nail-biting, hair-pulling, nerve-racking experience. Here are some words of wisdom straight from our own Groksters, a mix of recent college grads, industry vets, and some who are in between.
Tailor it to the specific role you are applying for. A relevant objective can help make a clear case for why you should be considered. Of course, a good GPA will get your foot in the door, but the skills you’ve learned through challenging school projects and internships can make you stand out. Take those major learning experiences and create a unique story that represents your journey, goals, and who you are as a person. And find a way to make your story relevant to the position you’re interviewing for.
Your social media presence is an extension of your resume. Any employer who is seriously considering you will take a look. Enhance your accounts with posts that represent your passions, hobbies, and lifestyle… Unless your passions and hobbies include binge drinking every weekend.
Interview etiquette. Your interview begins from the moment you are contacted. The way you interact with everyone, from the hiring manager to the receptionist is noted. There’s nothing worse than arriving late or without a clear understanding of the company, their mission, and their core values. Always bring a few hard copies of your resume and a pad to take notes on. Express your curiosity and ask smart questions. This is the time to demonstrate your best qualities such as confidence, willingness to learn, and a positive attitude. Most job postings won’t list these skills as requirements, but you can bet that every employer is going to make sure you possess them. And be yourself. Don’t fall into the trap of saying what you think the interviewer wants to hear.
Check out an agency’s social media and website to have a good understanding of their culture. We look for people who will fit with our culture. We have an open office and that extends to the open and honest way we speak to and work with one another. We have a diverse group with a lot in common: the willingness to work hard. Play well together. And over deliver for our clients.
We wish all the college grads the best of luck on their job search.
